Choosing a Clock

Cabinetry

The cabinetry should have clean tight joints with no gaps or uneven corners. The choice of woods to match adjacent piecesis critical. The finish should match across all joints. Clock cases are made from walnut, cherry, mahogany,or other fine woods. Veneers may be used, these may be burled or booked. Fine veneers are matched across joints so the veins match from piece to piece. Fine finishes are carved, sanded, stained, lacquered and hand rubbed.

Carvings

Carvings are made from carefully selected and matched woods. Some are mirror images on opposite corners, some are singletons. Modern clocks are given unique model numbers and are assigned an individual serial number.

Movements

The movement determines thequality of the clock. Modern clock movements are machine manufactured from hardened brass. The two major clock movement makers in the world today are Hermle and Kieninger, both are German manufacturers.
However, Kieninger is owned by the American clock manufacturer Howard Miller Company in Zeeland MI. Hermle has a factory here in the USA.

Moon Dial

Before printed calendars werereadily available our forefathers planted their crops, planned their celebrations, andregulated their lives by the phases of the moon. The lunar month is 29 1/2 days long.Clocks with moon dials keep track of the phases of the moon for you.

Chimes and Strike

Chimes vary from manufacturer tomanufacturer. Most triple chime clocks have the Westminster, St. Michael & Whittingtonchimes. It can be a four or eight note melody.
